Finding Yourself

Who do you think you are?

It’s an interesting question isn’t it?

Did you know that it implies that you don’t actually know?

Look at the question closely, ‘who do you THINK you are?’

If you were trying to get to the bottom of that question, to really understand what it’s trying to point you at, you would be better off asking “Who are you?”

But most people just answer that question by saying their name.

And that’s not really who we are, now is it? After all, we can change our name. I have, twice!

Let’s take a closer look at who we are, or who we think we are, and see if we can actually figure out this universal conundrum.

You Are Not Who You Think You Are

Firstly, think back throughout your life. Think of all the things you have thought about yourself that turned out to be wrong. You might have thought you were kind, only to realize that you have a mean streak.

You might have thought you were a singer, only to lose interest in singing to take up dance instead. You might have thought you were really intelligent, only to learn that there is a different kind intelligence called ‘street smarts’ in which you are lacking. At many times in your life, our perception of who we are changes.

Let’s look a little deeper.

So, you think you’re human?

What about the people who have had near death of experiences of visiting other dimensions, floating through heavenly realms with no physical body? Or what about people who are born with multiple limbs, or more advanced or diminished senses? Are they still human, or are they some other form of sentience? And what about death, will you still be human after death? What happens to your consciousness then? Mind-boggling isn’t it?

The difficulty in answering the question of who we are comes when we realise that what we are, and what we think we are, is in constant flux. There is no set concrete form that we can identify with. Nothing lasts forever, not even our identity of ourselves.

Before you go having a meltdown due to an identity crisis that I hope you won’t blame me for, let me tell you why this is actually really good news for us all.

Malleable Magnificence

When you know that who you are isn’t set in stone, it actually frees you. It allows you to change, to become something different, to become whatever you want to be. When who you think you are today is allowed to become something different tomorrow, the possibilities of what you can do, and what you can achieve with your life are endless. For as long as you are breathing, you can think differently, feel differently, and look at yourself and the world through different eyes.

When you allow yourself to be free like this, you can design yourself and your life in absolutely any way that you can possibly conceive. When you let go of your limited views about who you are, or what you are capable of, you can truly design the ‘You’ that you want to be.

When you allow yourself to change your mind, to grow, to evolve, you can begin to be conscious about the ways in which you go about doing this.

Rather than ask yourself “Who am I?” or “Who do I think I am?”, you can ask yourself “Who do I want to be?” or “Who do I want to become?”.

That is a much more unlimited question. It isn’t about who you have been, or who you are today, it’s about the unlimited potential that you have to become absolutely anything you can dream of tomorrow.

It’s a much better way of looking at things. Give it a go and see where the realm of infinite possibilities takes you.
