Finding Yourself

Our external environments reflect our internal state. When we know this, we can look at our environment and figure out exactly the kind of person we are. If our environments are clean and orderly, then we know that our internal state reflects this. If our external environments are disordered, then we can be certain that our internal state reflects this too.

However, this doesn’t just apply to our external environments; it also applies to our personal behavior.

Our behaviors reflect the kinds of things we think, the emotions that we have, and the types of things that we value in our lives.

In order to get a clear understanding of the type of person we are, or perhaps even learn some things that we are unaware of about ourselves, all we have to do is take a close look at our behavior.

Thinking & Feeling Leads to Being

Generally speaking, you are either completely aware of this already, or you are completely unaware. Most people, when they first hear about this sort of thing begin to investigate it. That is why I say you either already know this or you really don’t.

If you have never heard this before, you are about to learn something extremely important about yourself. And if you have already inquired into this sort of information, I’m going to try and add in some extra valuable information just for you.

The way that you think has been determined by your life up to this point. The various things you experienced as a child, teen, and later in your life have all accumulated into what you would consider to be your personality.

It should really go without saying, but your personality determines the kinds of things you do in your life, the situations you find yourself in, the types of people you associate with, and even the kind of career that you will have.

So, to get a better understanding of yourself, all you have to do is look at the situations you find yourself in, and the kinds of behavior you express.

Here’s the thing about this type of inquiry though; people don’t tend to reflect on themselves when things are going good for them. Very rarely when things go well in our lives do we stop and think about why they are going well.

When our health is good, we mostly take it for granted and don’t stop to think about it. When we have the perfect job, we just enjoy it and don’t consider how we ended up there.

On the other hand, though, when things go bad, when our health fails, when we lose the job, or when we fall victim to unfortunate circumstances in life, we tend to look for the cause. This is because deep down, we want to try to figure out how to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

But why don’t we have the same approach when things go right?

Why don’t we reflect on our behavior then, in order ensure that things continue to head in the right direction for us?

I think that question might be a little side tracked from the main point of this article, but I also think it’s something that it’s worth each of us considering.

So, if you really want to know yourself in a way that reveals what you really think about yourself, just look to your behavior.

  • If you are reckless in life, you probably don’t have a very good opinion of yourself.
  • If you always attract unhealthy partners, they you likely have low self-worth.
  • If you find yourself sabotaging your successes, then you have low self-worth.
  • If you are overly timid and anxious, you probably don’t believe much in your capacity for strength.
  • If you an aggressive and easily agitated person, your opinion of yourself is probably a bit too high.

Look closely at your behaviors, the situations you find yourself in, and your responses to those situations, and everything you need to know about yourself will be revealed.
